Community service

Make a difference today

Thank you for dedicating your time and effort to help the animals at our shelter. Your commitment makes a significant impact on the lives of these animals in need. Keep up the fantastic work, and know that your contribution is truly valued.

High School community service

Attention high school students looking to fulfill your community service hours for your civics class or National Honor Society requirements! CHS offers a rewarding opportunity for you to make a difference while earning your hours. Join us during our cleaning shifts from Tuesday through Saturday, between 8am to 11am. To participate, a parent or guardian is required to accompany you for the entire shift. You won't have direct contact with animals during your shift, but as a bonus, at the end of your volunteer session, you'll have the chance to spend quality time with one of our lovable dogs or cats. Make your hours count by helping those who need it the most at CHS. Please contact the volunteer coordinator to schedule your shifts.

Court ordered community service

Thank you for your interest in serving your court appointed community service hours at Cherryland Humane Society. Please read the below information in its entirety to learn more about our Court Ordered Volunteer Program, and its guidelines.

Court Ordered Volunteers (COV’s) must read and agree to all guidelines, and sign a Code of Conduct and waiver to get started. COV’s must also fill out an application and be accepted into the program before beginning hours of service. CHS reserves the right to refuse a COV for any reason.

Overview of the Program:

  • Court Ordered Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. If under 18, a parent or guardian must be present, and completing the same tasks as the minor.

  • COV’s do not have direct contact with animals, and are not allowed to enter spaces where animals are present (i.e. being in a kennel with a dog, or opening up a cat condo to interact with the cat).

  • Cherryland Humane Society may turn away volunteers who do not show up for their shift on time, show up intoxicated, do not stay on task, or exhibit inappropriate behavior.

  • CHS may end volunteer shifts early for any reason.

  • Shifts are filled on a first come first serve basis, and you must sign up online through the scheduling program Cervis. Volunteers must be approved for the COV program before signing up for shifts.

  • All COV’s will need to apply and be accepted into the program prior to beginning service.

  • CHS will not accept any volunteers into the program that need court appointed hours for a violent crime, a felony, or any animal abuse/neglect situations.

  • COV’s will need to have a valid Driver’s License or State ID to keep on file with CHS.

  • COV’s will adhere to the dress code, which includes closed toe shoes, an appropriate top, and pants that come down to at least past the knee.

  • Volunteers will be required to wear a Court Ordered Volunteer name tag to identify them to our staff and Volunteers.

  • Must be willing to work around animal waste and cleaning chemicals.

  • COV’s will be primarily expected to clean both inside and outside. Duties could include, but are not limited to, cleaning kennels, cleaning outside runs, mopping, washing dishes, laundry, cleaning outside grounds, ETC.

Process to Begin Serving Hours:

  • Fill out the Court Ordered Volunteer Application and return it to the Volunteer Coordinator by email or mail.

  • Allow 48-72 business hours for processing of your application. The Volunteer Coordinator will be verifying that the details provided on your application are correct.

  • Set up a pre-service meeting with the Volunteer Coordinator to discuss all rules/expectations, and to have a quick tutorial on how to sign up for shifts online.

  • Sign up for your shifts online to come in and serve your hours.

  • Come in for your first shift, and sign the Code of Conduct and Liability Waiver.

We look forward to meeting you!

Court Ordered Volunteers do not have direct contact with animals. We do not accept volunteers who have committed any felonies, a violent crime, or an animal abuse charge. Please fill out the application below in its entirety, and our Volunteer Coordinator will contact you. Filling out this application does not guarantee that you will be able to volunteer with us.
