Little Kid, Big DogIt is the desire of the Cherryland Humane Society that each pet adoption be a positive and rewarding experience. The CHS does its best to adopt out only healthy animals whose behavioral characteristics, as far as it is possible to determine, will be acceptable to those adopting the animal.

Because the CHS is a nonprofit organization operating on a limited budget, it is not possible to retain a staff veterinarian. Many measures are taken to provide healthy animals for adoption. It is possible, however, that the pet you have adopted may be incubating a contagious disease or parasitic infestation. The CHS, therefore, strongly recommends having your new dog or cat examined by a veterinarian prior to introducing the pet into your home. If the animal is taken home prior to the initial examination, it is strongly recommended that the new pet be isolated from other pets until the exam is completed. In rare instances, certain health problems can also be carried to humans. Prolonged, close human contact should be avoided until the initial exam is completed. In any event, the exam should be completed within two weeks of the adoption.

In the event that a health problem is discovered, or in case costly testing is called for, you have the option of either pursuing testing and/or treatment at your own expense, or returning the animal to the shelter within two weeks for a pet exchange. The CHS is financially unable to pay for, or to help pay for, medical expenses.

The CHS takes measures to determine the temperament and behavioral characteristics of the animals we receive. It is not possible, however, to provide total accuracy of such information, because animals may react differently to different environments and to different situations and circumstances. If you discover temperament and/or behavioral problems with the animal you adopt, you may return the new pet to the shelter within thirty days and exchange the pet for another.

The CHS does not, in any manner, guarantee the health, temperament, and/or behavior of any animal, nor do we authorize anyone on behalf of the CHS to guarantee such.
